Chappelow’s First Family Nature Night Fun
What a fun way to begin a new month with the very first family nature night at the brand new SOLE school, Chappelow! Families gathered at the welcome table to sign up for the raffle and get all the good info on where to find activities and pizza.
Many partners came to participate in the event bringing engaging activities and information for all. Gardens on Spring Creek and Denver Botanic Gardens both brought actual seeds to take home and grow! The Botanic Gardens concentrated on native grasses while the Gardens on Spring Creek showed how beans could grow with warmth and moisture. Both stations were sought out, and many walked the rest of the night carrying bean necklaces and planted pots.
History Colorado offered games of history bingo and photo ops with state symbols in front of our beautiful state flag. Bird Conservancy of the Rockies came with binoculars for bird identification, and many were fascinated by the owl skull and talons after trying their hand at identifying distant bird photos.
The raffle at 6 pm was highly anticipated. Students eagerly gripped their tickets, hoping to hear the winning number. Fishing poles and binoculars were a popular prize of the night, and lucky winners also received camping gear, and History Colorado Family Passes. The grand prize State Parks Gift Certificate was received by a very happy family eager to explore the parks in this beautiful state!
Were you brave enough to touch the hissing cockroaches that the Butterfly Pavilion brought to Nature Night? Some were also hesitant to touch the furs that Poudre Learning Center brought, but with a little more information, the wary became interested scientists investigating a new natural world.
CPW activities offered ranged from the ever-entertaining trivia wheel to Generation Wild activities and the Great Migration Game. Did you know that black bears are not only black? Were you able to jump as far as a Western Leopard Frog? How about as far as an Elk!? Track identification was a great thing to check off GOCO’s new list of ‘100 things to do before you’re twelve’ as well. From toddler to teen, the Great Migration game was also popular. Everyone discovered how hard it is to be a bird! Did you survive your migration?
It was a wonderful night full of fun for everyone. The SOLE program would like to thank all of our partners, volunteers, Chappelow staff, and everyone who attended that made the night a success! Welcome to SOLE!
