Exploring the Outdoors with Murphy Creek

Students of Murphy Creek slowly trickled through its doors for Family Nature Night on September 17. The YMCA and other programs were ending just as our Nature Night began, so any kids leaving those programs were encouraged to stay for our activities and FREE pizza! An estimate of around 55 kids and 35 adults (90 total) attended.

This was an awesome event for all that attended. Families were greeted near the flagpole where they signed in and received their raffle tickets. Outside, kids cast their fishing lines into the "pond" created on the front lawn, and also played an "Animal Tracks Matching Game" provided by Generation Wild. Inside, we had several booths set up by our wonderful partners.

A&H Adventures had their usual archery set-up in the gymnasium. The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies provided tons of biofacts ready for curious kiddos and their questions. The Butterfly Pavilion brought insect biofacts from their collection and even some LIVE insects! Kids learned the adaptations of the Madagascar hissing cockroach and the Black Widow, a Colorado-native spider. History Colorado was there with their fun Colorado-themed photo booth. And finally, the Morrison Nature Center amazed guests with their knowledge of animals by discussing how they adapt to their environment. Kids were able to observe skulls from several mammals and birds, as well as the furs of Beaver, Grey Wolf, and Red Fox. CPW provided a trivia wheel where kids are asked a trivia question about a specific animal native to Colorado. If you got the question correct, you won a prize!

Families were still signing in by the time the raffle came around. We gave away the usual prizes along with an additional 2 prizes: family passes for the History Colorado Center. These passes included 2 adult tickets and 4 kids tickets!

We couldn't put together such an awesome event without the help from our partners, volunteers, staff, and teachers who go above and beyond to make Family Nature Night an exciting and inclusive night. The SOLE Team is so grateful to be in the presence of such caring individuals. Thanks again for another amazing Family Nature Night!
