Great Backyard Bird Count 2020

Have you ever heard of the Great Backyard Bird Count? It is a 4 day citizen science event every year in February that allows birders around the world to gather data on bird populations! This year was the 23rd year of gathering data, and a few SOLE families were able to help research by inputting their findings from a Barr Lake bird walk on February 15th.

The SOLE team, in partnership with Barr Lake State Park and the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies was able to allow some SOLE families from Pennock, Edison and Stem Launch to join in with the count.

After a quick introduction, as well as time to explore the visitor center and have some snacks, teams assembled and went for an hour hike around Barr lake to see what birds they could spot!

As a team we found 15 different species of birds including Red-winged Blackbirds, House Sparrows, House Finches, Canada Goose, Black-capped Chickadees, Dark-eyed Junco's, and even some Bald Eagles!

After an hour of birding, everyone met up to calculate the bird species and number of birds that were spotted. The day ended with s'mores and hot chocolate by the fire!

Staff and Families had an amazing time and we can't wait for the 2021 Great Backyard Bird Count next year!
